Create a Hurricane Spiral
In this activity, you will create a hurricane spiral to better understand the spiral effect of a hurricane. You will discover what areas of a hurricane contain the most intense weather conditions and how these areas spiral when a hurricane moves.

- a printed copy of "Hurricane Spiral #1" (below)
- a printed copy of "Hurricane Spiral #2" (below)
- "Hurricane Radar Circle (below)
- a pencil with a sharp point
- scissors
- brad paper fastener
- colored pencils or crayons
Procedure:
- Print the two hurricane spirals provided below. Cut out the spirals on the outside black circles (also cut out any black areas labeled "cut")
- Color each circle to look similar to the "Hurricane Radar Circle" provided below. Think about what the different colors represent.
- With a sharpened pencil point, punch a hold through the black dot in the center of each spiral.
- Place "Hurricane Spiral 1" on top of "Hurricane Spiral 2" and push a fastener through the center of the holes in the spirals.
- Spin the wheel to make sure it moves freely.
- MOVE the top section of your Hurricane Spiral COUNTER-CLOCKWISE to see the spiral movement of a hurricane.
