Evacuation and Safety
In this activity, you will begin by learning about the different vocabulary and intensity levels to describe a hurricane. You will visit a website that will provides explanations of the hurricane stages and the hurricane levels. In addition, the website includes tips and ideas for preparation and evacuation in the case of a hurricane. This information will be valuable when informing your citizens about evacuation procedures and safety tips.

- Paper
- Pencil
- Visit the website Hurricane Safety Information and review your knowledge of hurricanes by reading the top half of the website.
- Find the section labeled "Know the Lingo". This section addresses the vocabulary used to express the intensity of hurricanes, including the stages of a hurricane. Read and write a short response to the importance of this vocabulary in our society. In addition, look at the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale and discuss why a having a scale like this is important.
- Read the safety tips provided for before, during, and after a hurricane occurs. Pick out 3 tips that you can share with the citizens of your island for each period of time: before, during, and after. Write these and include them in your final brochure.
- Visit the website Hurricane Writing Prompt and read the scenario. Write a 1 paragraph (6-8 sentence) response about how the boy in the scenario best responded to the possible threats of a hurricane. Explain all of the important things that the boy did to prepare for the danger.
